QUICK CHECKS
Access Braille
- Match
- Confirm the exact facility, wording, symbols and required tactile content with the approved access schedule.
- Height
- Set tactile and Braille content 1200–1600 mm above finished floor level; a single line of tactile characters sits 1250–1350 mm above it. Measure to the content, not the top of the panel.
- Fix
- Level the sign and use the specified fixing system on a clean, dry surface. Keep raised lettering and Braille clear of adhesive.
Location exceptions
- For required room or exit identification, use the latch-side wall 50–300 mm from the architrave; use the door where that wall position is not possible. Other facilities follow their own approved location details.
- Exit Braille identifies “Exit” and “Level” plus the floor number or name. “Fire Stairs” alone does not supply that information.
- Hearing assistance: identify the system, coverage and receiver location on the approved plan. Parents’ rooms, showers, adult change facilities and lifts follow their specific access documentation.
- Access wayfinding: confirm the actual route and arrows from the viewer’s approach. Where required, direct people from an inaccessible entrance to the nearest accessible entrance.
- Lift capacity and emergency notices use supplier-approved information and locations. Keep controls, labels and access panels clear.
Vision strips on glazing
- This is a separate glazing check: on required glazing, use a solid, non-transparent continuous band at least 75 mm high across the full panel width, with its lower edge 900–1000 mm above finished floor level.
- Check at least 30% luminance contrast against the floor or surfaces within 2 m on the opposite side under site lighting. Follow the film supplier’s method and project-adopted AS 1428.1/NCC D4D13 requirements.
